The Saarloos Wolfdog owes its existence to the vision of one man — Leendert Saarloos. In 1932 this Dutch breeder crossed a German Shepherd named Gerard van der Fransenum with the she-wolf Fleuri, striving to obtain a healthier, more natural and more resilient dog.

Recognition and legacy

The breed was officially recognised by the Dutch kennel club in 1975, already after the founder's death, and named after him in honour of his work. The FCI adopted the standard, emphasising the breed's reserved, alert and independent temperament.

The Saarloos is a dignified dog, reserved towards strangers — it requires an owner who is patient, consistent and sensitive to subtle communication.
